Buy both the book and the DVD together for £30.00.

The book: 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of the merger of corporate giant Massey-Harris with design supremo Harry Ferguson’s tractor company. This book is published to commemorate the anniversary. Well known author John Farnworth has spent a lifetime working with, and writing about, these companies and has gathered together a fascinating compilation of personal recollections from people who were involved with the two companies at the time of the merger. It is lavishly illustrated with around 500 archive photographs, altogether presenting a unique piece of history which will fascinate and inform tractor and farm machinery enthusiasts of any age.

The DVD: Using archive footage, much of which has not seen the light of day for many years, this programme shows how the MF tractor evolved from the little 35 through to the mighty 8690 model, and how combine harvesters progressed from the very popular 400 and 500 series up to the giant rotary monsters of the 21st Century.

The Last Tractor The History of Banner Lane
The Banner Lane factory was one of the largest and most successful tractor plants in the world. For over 50 years the factories highly skilled workers were at the forefront of production and development of tractor manufacturing. We look back over the years with some Banner Lane employees as they share their experiences and help tell the story from the birth of the TE20 to the sad day that “The Last Tractor” rolled off the production line.

This programme looks at the extensive history of the Banner Lane factory in Coventry. From being built and used as a shadow factory during the Second World War, the deal between Harry Ferguson and Sir John Black of the Standard Motor Company to begin production of the Ferguson TE20 there in 1946, to over half a century of pioneering triumph and unrivalled accomplishment.

Through revealing in depth interviews with key members of staff from the factory we learn about the increasing success of the Banner Lane plant including the different tractor models, which were designed, developed and built there by the highly skilled and dedicated workers who were Massey Ferguson to the core.

This stalwart of British manufacturing has sadly reached the end of its life but the achievements, the tractors and the memories will live on.

The Big Massey Ferguson Vol. 1
This new DVD starts off with a visit to Harry Ferguson’s birthplace at Growell near to Dromore and Banbridge in Co. Down and after a brief stop we call at a local ploughing event to see some old Ferguson tractors in action.

Leaving there we call at John McElderrys in Ballymoney Co. Antrim one of the biggest Massey Ferguson dealers in the country and see them get a new Fendt ready for the start of the new grass season, and watch it in action with its new owner’s at Sloan Contracts from Co. Antrim. Then we follow them to the old Shanes Castle Estate between Randalstown and Antrim on the shores of Lough Neagh, bringing in the grass with their team of Massey’s.

Then after travelling down the country to meet Pat White from Fethard Co. Tipperary we see him plough and sow 850 acres of winter wheat. He is a Harry Ferguson fanatic, so much so that he has painted one of his small aeroplanes in the colours of the great man himself for the centenary in 2009 and one of the jobs that he has to do is to bring some sandwiches out to the field for the workers in the small Tiger Cub Aeroplane.

This taken with some new machinery footage from some of the biggest Massey Ferguson equipment working on farms from 1000 to 4900 acres in Elgin and St. Fergus and other places in Scotland.

Heading on back to Ireland, we head down south to Cork, where we meet up with the Tait family who have ten Massey’s all working around the farm, bringing in the crop of beans from the fields th...

MF Farm Implements & Machinery Part 1
George French & Dennis Burston
Massey Ferguson Farm Implements and Machinery Part 1 1958-1970

In the period 1958-70 Massey Ferguson developed an outstanding range of implements and machinery that worked as a team with an equally fine succession of tractors. The farmer could be sure to find in the dealerships the mechanical aids that were just right for his circumstances.

In order to achieve this, the company had to have a great diversity of machines available. Dennis Burston and George French indicate the scope by selecting original or authentically restored implements representative of the period and coupling them with appropriate tractors. They are filmed doing the work for which they were designed. The great age of the MF 35, 65 and 100 series as well as the early balers and combines is brought to life again. This is the first in a three-part series.

To be seen on this DVD:

Ferguson TEF and 2-furrow plough, M-H 744 and manure spreader, M-H 726 combine harvester, MF 35X and Ferguson 3-furrow plough, MF 65 and 793 4-furrow plough,MF 35X and 722 disc harrows, MF 35 and 714 flex spring-tine harrows, MF 65 and 728 Superseeder grain and fertiliser drill, MF 35 4-cylinder diesel and 735 loader, MF 35X and 712 dung spreader, MF 35 and 732 cutter-bar mower, MF 35 and 8 baler, MF 65 and 802 baler, MF 65 and 701 baler, MF 735 combine harvester, MF 780 combine harvester, MF 17 trailer, MF 165 and 41 3-furrow plough, MF 165 and 46 2-furrow reversible plough, MF 130 ...

Massey Ferguson's Thinking Tractor Part One

Massey-Ferguson's
Thinking Tractors Part One - Dawn of the
Electronic Revolution

Part One of the first two DVDs in a 4-
part series covering the Massey Ferguson
3000 series from its birth in 1986 to
the range’s replacement in 1994.

The modern tractor as we know it today
was born in 1986. In this programme we
tell the story of how this came about
and how Massey Ferguson became the first
tractor manufacturer to truly embrace
electronics in agriculture.

We follow the story as Massey Ferguson
produced the first production tractor
with electronically controlled three-
point linkage in the form of the 4000
Series in 1979 and then took this and
improved it on the 2005 and 3500 Series
of tractors in the early 1980s. But
this was only the beginning as the
company was about to take a giant leap
forwards with the introduction of the
new 3000 Series in 1986 which bristled
with electronic monitoring and control
systems. Using previously unseen
archive footage we see how the very
first prototypes were tested and
developed to produce the world’s first
‘thinking tractors’ and how these were
then launched to the farming public
alongside the smaller 300 series
machines.

From now on farming would never be the
same again!

To follow later this spring are Parts
Three and Four. Part Three - Extended
Family will cover the introduction of
new models including the 3100 series.

Massey-Ferguson's
Thinking Tractors Part Two - A New
Power

Part Two of the first two DVDs in a 4-
part series covering the Massey Ferguson
3000 series from its birth in 1986 to
the range’s replacement in 1994.

The modern tractor as we know it today
was born in 1986. In this programme we
take a look at how the brand new Massey
Ferguson 3000 Series tractors were
introduced to the farming public
followed by the bigger 3600 Series
machines that took the new electronic
revolution to new heights.
Using previously unseen archive footage
we are taken back to the mid-1980s and
it soon becomes plain that the new
Massey Ferguson 3000 and 3600 Series set
the benchmark by which all other
tractors will be measured. Electronics
had only been used very sparingly in
agricultural machinery up to now but,
thanks to Massey Ferguson, the future
had changed forever!

The wealth of original Massey Ferguson
films is joined by a unique look at one
particular 3070 tractor at work on a
Suffolk farm during the 1990s taken from
our own archives and giving us a
fascinating case study of the 3070 model
itself.

To follow later this spring are Parts

new models including the 3100 series.
Part Four - End of an Era will cover the
final new models in the 3000 series plus

Massey-Ferguson's Thinking Tractors Part 3 - Extended Family
In this programme we see how the 3000
and 3600 Series tractors expanded with
not only new members in each but also a
completely new 3100 Series joining them.
Previously unseen archive footage shows
us how Massey Ferguson managed to stay
ahead of the field in tractor design,
with innovations such as the Memotronic
computer interface system and the
introduction of the Dynashift semi-
powershift transmission.

The wealth of original Massey Ferguson
film is joined by a unique look at one
particular 3085 model at work in Suffolk
on a vegetable-growing enterprise. This
offers a superb case study of one of the
thinking tractor range.

Dare to Compare

This exciting series of programmes digs deep into Massey Ferguson’s film archive, bringing to the screen rare and original films depicting machines from the 1930s right up to the present day. The series builds into a unique record of the impact Massey Ferguson and its predecessors made to agriculture the world over.

Volume Twenty One introduces the short lived but highly regarded 600 series, a technologically advanced, comfortable, reliable and powerful range that was introduced into the hostile agricultural machinery market of the early eighties. Our first film draws upon the similarities between farming with 600 series tractors and racing rally cars to illustrate why in both pursuits a working partnership between man and machine is needed to guarantee success. Then a fantastic film that dares to compare MF tractors with similar models built by Ford, John Deere, Case, & David Brown among others. We finish off with the mighty 800 series combine ensuring a happy ending to harvest time.

Massey Ferguson Archive Special - Ferguson TE20 Mechanisation of the Farm
In this fourth MFA Special Edition using genuine archive films, looks at the impact Harry Ferguson’s tractors and implements made to the mechanisation of the farm.

New and efficient ways of dealing with the day to day labour intensive problems of keeping livestock by making use of existing equipment– which usually included the TE20. The DVD also focuses
on mechanised crop row thinning and in particular sugar beet. A film released in Australia all about the Fergie is highlighted and by all accounts the locals were mighty impressed.

Hen’s teeth are more common than film of the Ferguson Model A tractor - better known as the Ferguson-Brown! Home movie footage of it harvesting and ploughing demonstrated beautifully what life was like all those years ago.

Farmers who farmed ‘The Ferguson Way’ expected top quality products with top quality service and that’s exactly what they got. Also included is a rousing call for building economically produced high quality tractors, based on Ferguson’s factory at Banner Lane.

So with considerable help from the TE20, farming became much more efficient and that famous ‘three point hitch and hydraulic system’ is still fitted to most tractors today – what an incredible legacy to Mechanisation of the Farm.
