The Combine Harvester
Jonathan Whitlam
This book tells the complete story of
one of the most significant
agricultural inventions of all time –
the combine harvester. Starting with
the early straw walkers and rotary
models, author Jonathan Whitlam charts
the chronological evolution of these
complex machines which soon became
indispensable to the cereal farmer.
The author shows how the combine
developed into the huge modern
machine, capable of processing
hundreds of acres of wheat in a day.

The story of the combine harvester is
meshed with the cereal harvest,
starting with the first mechanisation
of the harvest with the sail reaper,
moving through to the binder and then
the threshing drum. The book describes
the early arrival of the combine
harvester in the shape of the reaper-
thresher in the USA and then smaller,
more compact trailed versions that
were also used in Europe. The self-
propelled combine arrived in the
1940s, which is when the idea really
began to take off.

The book looks at the various
different makes of combine harvester
such as those produced by Case, New
Holland, International Harvester, John
Deere and Massey Ferguson and
discusses what the future holds for
the combine harvester, including
advanced designs and driverless

Accompanied by a wide variety of new
colour photographs, this book will

The Story of Powell Brothers & Whitaker
Gwynfor Williams
In this book the author uses a wealth of
rare archive material gleaned over years
of research, to produce a book that will
not only be of interest to the Powell
enthusiast but the general reader as

In 1876 John Evan Powell and Robert
Jones Powell formed Powell Brothers Ltd
Cambrian Ironworks Wrexham. The
following year they were joined by John
Whitaker. The company bought the patent
and rights to manufacture a potato
digging machine. This machine “The Best
Potato Raiser in the World” was exported
all over the globe.

During the First World War the Cambrian
Ironworks produced thousands of shell
casings and mortar bombs. On cessation
of hostilities, Powells entered the
fiercely competitive oil engine and
motor cycle markets with limited
success. By 1924 they encountered
financial difficulties and closed in

Tractor Legends
Jonathan Whitlam
This book covers the tractor models
that have stood out, from the early
twentieth century to the present day,
either because of their innovative
design and engineering features or
because they set new standards in
reliability and popularity.

Beginning with the background to the
development of the first tractor,
Jonathan Whitlam takes us on a
fascinating journey through a variety
of tractor types, both large and
small, and their stand-out features.
This includes the Fordson F, the first
mass produced tractor which set the
pattern for future tractor design; the
Field Marshall, which introduced
diesel engines for tractors; the
Ferguson TE20 with its novel three-
point linkage; the Massey Ferguson 35
and later 135, which stand out for
sheer popularity; and the John Deere
3640, with its powerful six-cylinder
engine and advanced cab. The book also
describes the computerised systems
featured in many of the latest

Accompanied by superb colour
photography of all the tractors, this
book has something for every tractor
and agricultural machinery enthusiast.

British Tipper Lorries
Tipper lorries have been part and
parcel of road transport since the
beginnings of the age of motor
vehicles. In fact their roots are in
horse-drawn carts, which were built to
tip by balance and gravity. For many
years, and probably still today, the
tipper lorry was seen as a dirty,
well-worn, poorly maintained and
overloaded example of road haulage,
not particularly beloved by the
general public.

As they are used in all forms from
lightweight four-wheelers to maximum
capacity artics, carrying almost any
commodity that could be loaded in
bulk, tipper lorries could be said to
be the backbone of British industrial
requirements. All makes of lorries
have been used as tippers, with no
exceptions, providing a great variety
for the road transport enthusiast.
Many endure short, hard-worked lives,
while others soldier on to greater
longevity, perhaps engaged in long-
distance work. As time has passed,
lorries have been allowed to carry
more weight and become larger and, as
a consequence, more powerful. For the
transport enthusiast this brought an
even bigger variety of types, up to 44
tonnes gross weight, which Bill Reid,
with nearly 200 unpublished images,
shows in this fascinating book.

Four Wheels Ahead The Story of SAME Tractors First Edition 1987
Massimo Di Nola
First Edition - December 1987

Brand New Boxed Book in Super

The story of SAME Tractors is a
threefold one. It is the story of one
man's remarkable ingenuity. It is the
story of a company that in sixty years
has risen to become a world leader in
its field. But it is also the history
of Italian industrial mechanization
from its beginnings to the present

When in 1952 the world saw the first
four-wheel drive tractor with a true
diesel engine, 35 years had passed
since Francesco Cassani had drawn up
the first plans for this idea. Years
of hard work and effort, struggling
against financial hardship and the
conservatism of agricultural and
academic worlds alike, against
powerful competitors who already held
the market in their grip. But every
true inventor, and Francesco Cassani
is certainly among their number,
creates his own market, his own
demand. With an innovative product
that totally transforms the terms of
the equation vis a vis

Francesco Cassani left not only an
outstanding technical heritage, a
range of tractors among the most
innovative and advanced in the world,
and a large modern manufacturing
plant. He left as well, in his Will
and Testament, a precise expression of
those basic, immutable values culled
from experience, on which his Same was
built, piece by piece. Few words, but
quintessential. These words are worth
a closer...
